ARTICLE SUMMARY
Delivery to ported numbers
SYMPTOMS
SMS messages sent to ported numbers (mobile numbers moved from one operator to another under the 'number portability' system) are often not delivered.
RESOLUTION
At present Clickatell Online routes SMS messages depending on the network prefix and which operator the prefix was originally allocated to. For instance: the prefix '82' belongs to Vodacom in South Africa, so if a SMS is sent to a number starting with +2782 our system will determine that +27 is South Africa and 82 is Vodacom, therefore push the SMS down the Vodacom delivery routes. The same goes for all other operators, +30697 will be routed as +30 Greece and 697 Cosmote.
The problem with prefix based routing is that a number may be ported from one operator to another, which means a number starting with the prefix +30697 may be moved from Cosmote to Vodafone. When we deliver the SMS we will still determine which carrier(s) to use based on the prefix, so the carriers for Cosmote will be used to deliver the SMS to a number which now belongs to Vodafone. If the carrier(s) used for Cosmote does not also cover Vodafone the SMS may fail.
